Bill overview
This bill updates California law to protect employees who are victims of violence or have family members who are victims. It clarifies that employers cannot discriminate against or retaliate against these employees for taking time off for legal proceedings or to seek assistance related to qualifying acts of violence, such as obtaining restraining orders or accessing victim services. The bill also establishes requirements for employers to provide reasonable accommodations and confidentiality for employees requesting leave due to these circumstances. Importantly, the protections apply retroactively to actions occurring before January 1, 2025, and expands enforcement authority to the Civil Rights Department.
