Bill overview
This bill updates California’s protective orders to include firearms and ammunition. Starting January 1, 2026, a court issuing a protective order will require the restrained person to immediately relinquish any firearms and ammunition they possess. The bill also mandates that the Judicial Council include a remote appearance option on petition forms and requires courts to allow remote hearings for specific types of restraining orders at no cost. Furthermore, law enforcement officers will be required to take custody of both firearms and ammunition discovered during domestic violence or other related incidents, and the state will reimburse local agencies for these expanded duties.
