Bill overview
This bill amends California’s Political Reform Act of 1974 to allow candidates and elected officials to use campaign funds for security expenses, such as installing and monitoring security systems or providing personal security. Initially, the bill eliminates a monetary cap on these expenses until January 1, 2029, after which a limit of $10,000 per year would apply. It also broadens the definition of ‘security expenses’ to include payments to a candidate’s family members, excluding payments to relatives within the third degree of consanguinity and firearm purchases. The bill also incorporates amendments from another bill, AB 808, contingent on both bills being enacted and AB 808 taking effect last.
