Bill overview
This bill modifies the California Dental Practice Act to address the approval of foreign dental schools. Currently, foreign schools must complete a specific accreditation process with the Commission on Dental Accreditation (CODA) to gain approval. This bill maintains approval for schools already approved before January 1, 2024, until they are denied accreditation by CODA or withdraw their application, provided they apply for accreditation by January 1, 2026, and update the board on their progress. Graduates from these schools will be eligible for licensure, subject to a two-year practice requirement in designated underserved areas. The bill also requires the Dental Board to report workforce data related to graduates of foreign dental schools in its first sunset review after January 1, 2032, to help address dentist shortages in California.
