Bill overview
This bill changes how courts provide explanations of their decisions in trials. Currently, a party could request a written statement of the court’s reasoning. This bill requires all requests for such a statement to be made in writing, or if there’s a court transcript, orally before the decision is finalized. It also mandates that the court serve the statement on all parties, and allows the court to issue a statement even without a request, or to order a draft from a party. Finally, it extends the deadline for the court clerk to enter judgment to 30 days, allowing time for a statement of decision to be finalized.
