Bill overview
This bill aims to restrict the use of Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits for the purchase of soda. It would require the Michigan Department of Social Services to seek a waiver from the U.S. Department of Agriculture to exclude soda from the list of eligible food items under SNAP guidelines. If the waiver is granted, SNAP recipients would be prohibited from buying soda with their benefits. If the waiver is not granted, the department would need to reapply annually.
