Bill overview
This bill expands who can legally perform marriages in Michigan. Currently, district court judges, magistrates, probate judges, and certain elected officials like mayors and county clerks could solemnize a marriage. The bill now allows civil celebrants, state legislators, and religious practitioners (ministers, clerics, or religious practitioners) who are ordained or authorized to perform marriages to also have this authority. It also clarifies fees associated with marriages performed by city and county officials.
