Bill overview
This bill requires the Michigan Department of Corrections to collect information about an incarcerated individual’s address before they were jailed and their demographic data. This information will then be provided to the independent citizens redistricting commission after each federal census. The goal is to incorporate this data into redistricting plans, helping ensure fair representation in congressional and state legislative districts. The Department of State will also request data from the U.S. Department of Justice to supplement the information collected.
