Bill overview
This bill changes how court records are sealed in eviction cases in Michigan. When a landlord initiates a quick eviction process, the court will initially keep these records private until a judgment is issued. After a judgment for the landlord is entered, the records will be public for two years, but then automatically become private again. However, if the eviction was based on specific reasons like illegal drug activity, a health hazard, or threats of violence, the records will remain public for three years. The court can release these records to researchers or journalists, but only with strict safeguards to protect the tenant’s privacy.
