Bill overview
This bill would allow landlords in Michigan to return security deposits to tenants via electronic transfer, such as direct deposit or through payment apps, instead of using checks or money orders. Currently, landlords must provide a check or money order for the difference between the claimed damages and the security deposit. The bill would require landlords to deposit the funds into the tenant’s account within 10 days of sending the damage notice. It also maintains the requirement for tenants to respond to the damage notice by mail within 7 days.
