Bill overview
This bill seeks to allow law enforcement officers to issue seatbelt tickets to drivers and passengers regardless of whether the driver is actively enforcing a traffic law. Currently, in Massachusetts, seatbelt tickets can only be issued if a police officer is observing a traffic violation, such as speeding or running a red light. This legislation would change that, aiming to increase seatbelt usage and potentially reduce injuries and fatalities related to car accidents. The bill has been referred to the Public Safety and Homeland Security committee and is currently undergoing study.
