Overview
This bill amends Alabama’s arson laws to broaden the definition of arson in the first degree. Specifically, it now includes arson that occurs in connection with a theft, requiring the arsonist to know or reasonably suspect that someone is present in the building at the time. If the damage caused by the fire or explosion exceeds $25,000, the crime is classified as a Class A felony, carrying a minimum sentence of 20 years in prison.
