Bill overview
The SERVE Our Communities Act aims to help communities safely reintegrate individuals released from prison by providing grants to states and local governments. These funds can be used for mentoring programs, transitional services, and training designed to reduce recidivism among violent offenders. To receive funding, jurisdictions must allow courts to consider public safety when setting bail or pretrial release and demonstrate efforts to prevent repeat offenses, such as improving community-police relations. The bill authorizes approximately $10 million annually from 2026 to 2031 to support these initiatives.
