Bill overview
This bill, known as Sarah’s Law, requires U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) to detain non-U.S. citizens charged with crimes resulting in death or serious bodily injury. The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) must also gather information about victims of these crimes and provide that information to the victims, their families, or guardians. If an alien is charged with such a crime, DHS will consider them inadmissible for immigration and potentially deportable. The bill also mandates that DHS issue a detainer for these individuals and take custody when they are not already detained.
