Bill overview
The Community First Act aims to reduce the number of people incarcerated in local jails and the length of time they spend there. It does this by providing grants to local partnerships – including cities, tribes, nonprofits, and others – to implement strategies like reducing cash bail, expanding pretrial services, and creating diversion programs. The goal is to address inequities in the criminal justice system and ultimately decrease jail populations through data-driven planning and evidence-based practices.
