Bill overview
The University Accountability Act amends the Internal Revenue Code to hold tax-exempt educational institutions accountable for civil rights violations. It imposes a penalty, equal to the applicable penalty amount, on institutions found to have violated Title VI of the Civil Rights Act of 1964. Furthermore, the bill mandates a review of an institution’s tax-exempt status if it faces repeated civil rights violations, and requires these institutions to report details of any civil rights violations to the IRS. The Act also addresses the reversal of determinations and refunding of penalties.
