Bill overview
This bill changes how Congress gets cost estimates for proposed legislation. Currently, the Congressional Budget Office (CBO) is required to provide these estimates. This bill would allow committee chairs (excluding the Appropriations committees) to request cost estimates from private accounting firms instead. If a committee uses an estimate from a private firm, the CBO is prohibited from preparing its own estimate for that legislation, ensuring consistent use of the private firm’s assessment for budget purposes.
