Bill overview
The Stop Disaster Price Gouging Act aims to prevent businesses from unfairly raising prices during major disasters or emergencies. It prohibits price increases of more than 10% on essential goods and services, hotel lodging, and residential rentals for 30 days, and more than 50% on repair services for 180 days. The Federal Trade Commission will enforce these rules, and states can also take action to protect residents from price gouging, with the assistance of the FTC if needed. The bill also establishes a fund to support communities affected by disasters using penalties collected from violations.
