Bill overview
The TRACE Act aims to combat the illegal sale of firearms by requiring a hidden serial number on all newly manufactured firearms in the United States and enhancing the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives’ (ATF) ability to track firearms. It also mandates physical inventory checks by licensed firearms dealers, preserves background check records for a longer period, and removes certain funding restrictions that previously limited the ATF’s resources related to firearm regulation. The bill seeks to strengthen the legal framework for preventing gun trafficking and illegal firearm possession.
