Bill overview
The Lawless Cities Accountability Act of 2025 aims to restrict federal funding to states or local areas that are deemed ‘lawless’ by the Attorney General. The bill defines a ‘lawless jurisdiction’ based on actions like preventing law enforcement intervention during violence, withdrawing protection from areas law enforcement is entitled to access, disempowering law enforcement, or refusing federal assistance during a crisis. If a jurisdiction is found to be lawless, it would be barred from receiving federal funds until the Attorney General determines it is no longer a threat. The bill requires the Attorney General to publicly announce their determinations and the reasons behind them.
