Supplemental Security Income Equality Act

This bill, the Supplemental Security Income Equality Act, aims to extend Supplemental Security Income (SSI) benefits to eligible residents of Puerto Rico, the U.S. Virgin Islands, Guam, and American Samoa. It modifies existing law to include these territories within the definition of ‘state’ for SSI purposes, eliminates a limit on payments to these territories from certain programs, and extends eligibility to non-citizen U.S. nationals, specifically those born in American Samoa. The bill also grants the Social Security Administration authority to waive or modify program requirements to better suit the needs of each territory.
