Bill overview
This bill provides $162 million in emergency funding to help law enforcement agencies hire and rehire career law enforcement officers. The funds are intended to address public safety vacancies and are administered through the Department of Justice’s Community Oriented Policing Services (COPS) program. To ensure public safety, agencies receiving these funds must conduct background checks and psychological evaluations of newly hired or rehired officers, and cover the associated costs. The bill is designated as an emergency appropriation.
