Bill overview
The Megobari Act aims to counter the influence of China, Iran, and Russia in Georgia by authorizing the President to impose sanctions on foreign individuals and entities undermining Georgia’s security and stability. Specifically, it targets government officials involved in corruption or violence related to Euro-Atlantic integration, and requires the President to assess and potentially sanction individuals involved in significant corruption or undermining Georgia’s security. The bill also directs Congress to develop a long-term strategy for U.S. engagement with Georgia and to investigate Russian intelligence activities within the country, while suspending the U.S.-Georgia Strategic Partnership Commission until Georgia demonstrates commitment to democratic values and Euro-Atlantic integration.
