Bill overview
The Urban Canal Modernization Act amends the Omnibus Public Land Management Act of 2009 to expand the Bureau of Reclamation’s responsibilities to include modernizing aging urban canals. Specifically, the bill directs the Bureau of Reclamation, or the entity operating transferred works, to perform necessary maintenance and repairs on ‘urban canals of concern’ – canals that could lead to significant loss of life or property damage. The act provides federal funding, on a non-reimbursable basis, to cover 35% of the cost of these repairs, and clarifies that these funds count as a non-federal source for grant cost-sharing.
