Bill overview
This bill updates federal law to require all firearms sales, not just handguns, to be reported by Federal firearms licensees (FFLs) to law enforcement. Currently, FFLs are only required to report sales of two or more handguns to the same person within five business days. This change aims to improve tracking of firearm sales and potentially assist in preventing illegal gun trafficking. The bill expands the existing reporting requirement to cover all types of firearms.
Key provisions
- Requires FFLs to report all firearm sales to the same unlicensed person.
- Expands the reporting requirement to include all types of firearms, not just handguns.
- Mandates reporting of sales involving two or more firearms.
- Sets a five-business-day deadline for reporting these sales.
Who is affected
- Federal Firearms Licensees (FFLs)
- Unlicensed firearm purchasers
- Law enforcement agencies
- The firearms industry
Notable changes
- Broadens the existing reporting requirement under 18 U.S.C. § 923(g)(3)(A) to cover all firearms sales.
- Eliminates the specific restriction on reporting sales of pistols, revolvers, or combinations thereof.
