Bill overview
The Taiwan PLUS Act aims to strengthen defense cooperation between the United States and Taiwan. It seeks to formally designate Taiwan as a member of the ‘NATO Plus’ community of states, granting it similar rights and privileges as other NATO allies in relation to Foreign Military Sales. The bill also directs the U.S. to continue providing Taiwan with defense articles and services, focusing on bolstering Taiwan’s self-defense capabilities, particularly in areas like asymmetric warfare and resilient command and control. Finally, it proposes a mechanism to extend this enhanced cooperation for additional five-year periods based on a determination of national security interests.
