Bill overview
The Deterring External Threats and Ensuring Robust Responses to Egregious and Nefarious Criminal Endeavors Act, or DETERRENCE Act, amends several existing criminal statutes to enhance sentencing for offenses linked to foreign governments. Specifically, it increases potential prison sentences for kidnapping, murder-for-hire, stalking, and assaults, particularly when those crimes are committed with the knowledge or coordination of foreign actors. The bill also addresses influencing or impeding federal officials with threats against their families, and attempts to assassinate or kidnap presidential figures, all with enhanced penalties if foreign involvement is present.
