Bill overview
This bill, the Thiokol Memorial Gold Medal Act, honors the 30 workers who tragically died at the Thiokol Chemical Plant in Woodbine, Georgia, in 1971 and 1973. These individuals, many of whom were African American women, manufactured munitions during the Vietnam War and made significant contributions to the nation’s defense. Congress is awarding a Congressional Gold Medal to recognize their sacrifice, the improvements to safety and transportation that resulted from the disaster, and their pioneering role in a racially integrated workforce. The bill also provides for the display and study of the gold medal at the Thiokol Memorial Museum.
