Bill overview
The UPLIFT Act aims to strengthen federal immigration enforcement by requiring states and local governments to fully cooperate with federal authorities. It expands existing restrictions on these governments’ ability to limit information sharing with federal agencies regarding immigration status and to hinder compliance with immigration laws. The bill also broadens the criteria for issuing immigration detainers, allowing DHS to target individuals arrested on criminal charges or motor vehicle violations, and establishes a process for local governments to seek legal action against states for failing to comply with immigration laws. Finally, it clarifies the immunity afforded to state and local officials who comply with DHS detainers.
