Bill overview
The State Public Option Act aims to create a state Medicaid plan available to adults who aren’t already eligible for Medicaid and aren’t enrolled in other health insurance. Starting January 1, 2026, states can offer this option, with premiums and cost-sharing determined by the state. The bill also mandates that state Medicaid programs cover comprehensive sexual and reproductive health services, including abortion care, and provides enhanced federal matching funds to states that expand Medicaid eligibility. Furthermore, it establishes a premium assistance credit for individuals buying into Medicaid coverage.
