Bill overview
The Preventing Pretrial Gun Purchases Act aims to prevent individuals with existing court orders restricting firearm possession from purchasing guns. It amends existing gun control laws to include ‘pretrial release orders’ – court orders that prohibit firearm possession pending criminal trial – within the definition of who is prohibited from buying a firearm. The bill also updates background check procedures to ensure these orders are considered, and provides funding for states to report these orders to the National Instant Criminal Background Check System (NICS).
