Bill overview
The Defending American Property Abroad Act of 2025 aims to protect U.S. property located in foreign countries. Specifically, it designates certain ports and infrastructure within Western Hemisphere free trade partners as ‘prohibited property’ if they have been nationalized, expropriated, or subjected to discriminatory practices by the foreign government. The legislation also expands the Trade Act of 1974 to include actions by foreign governments that unfairly seize or control assets owned by U.S. persons. Finally, it prohibits U.S. vessels from using these designated ports for importing, releasing, docking, or servicing.
