Bill overview
This bill changes how Medicare pays long-term care hospitals (LTCHs) for patients discharged after October 1, 2026. Currently, LTCHs receive a different payment rate than acute care hospitals, but this bill introduces a new ‘high acuity’ criterion. If a patient’s discharge meets this criterion – specifically, being assigned a Medicare-Severity-Long-Term-Care-Diagnosis-Related-Group (MS-LTC-DRG) with a relative weight of 0.8 or higher – the LTCH will receive the same payment rate as an acute care hospital, rather than the site-neutral rate.
