Bill overview
The Grocery Reform And Safety Act (GRAS Act) aims to strengthen the regulation of substances considered ‘generally recognized as safe’ (GRAS) in food. It requires notification to the FDA before using GRAS substances, mandates reassessments of existing GRAS substances every 3-5 years, and establishes a process for reviewing and updating safety data. The bill also modifies the definition of ‘food additive’ and creates a framework for conducting and publicly disclosing safety evaluations of GRAS substances, including potential revocation of prior safety statements if new concerns arise.
