Bill overview
The Global Respect Act aims to hold foreign governments and individuals accountable for human rights violations against LGBTQI individuals. It authorizes the President to impose sanctions on those responsible for torture, prolonged detention, disappearance, or denial of life, liberty, or security based on sexual orientation or gender identity. The bill also establishes a process for identifying and listing such individuals, allows for public input, and includes provisions for revoking visas and restricting entry for those on the list. Finally, it directs the State Department to track violence and discrimination against LGBTQI individuals globally and incorporate this information into annual human rights reports.
