Bill overview
The Rural Hospital Closure Relief Act of 2025 aims to help rural hospitals stay open by temporarily expanding eligibility for ‘critical access hospitals’ (CAHs) under Medicare. Currently, hospitals must be far from other facilities or certified before 2006 to qualify as CAHs, which receive special Medicare payments. This bill allows hospitals serving underserved areas, experiencing financial difficulties, and with a strategic plan to maintain solvency to also qualify, provided they meet certain criteria. The bill also directs government agencies to study the impact of this change and recommend payment systems for rural hospitals.
