Bill overview
The Fair Repair Act requires manufacturers of digital electronic equipment to share documentation, parts, and tools with independent repair providers and equipment owners. It prohibits manufacturers from using tactics like ‘parts pairing’ to restrict repairs and prevent independent providers from fixing devices. The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) will enforce the law, and State attorneys general can also take action. The bill also clarifies definitions and excludes certain products like motor vehicles, medical devices, and off-road vehicles from its scope.
