Bill overview
The Sustaining Rural Healthcare Act aims to protect and potentially expand the designation of Critical Access Hospitals (CAHs) within the Medicare program. It modifies existing law to allow CAHs that are at risk of losing their designation due to specific criteria to retain it for up to three years if the Secretary determines that doing so would prevent a reduction in healthcare access. The bill also introduces a new discretionary authority for the Secretary to designate hospitals as ‘Critical Access in Character’ if they serve rural communities and face financial challenges, offering them Medicare reimbursement rates similar to CAHs for a limited time.
