Bill overview
This bill proposes a land exchange between the Chugach Alaska Corporation and the federal government to address historical conflicts stemming from the 1989 Exxon Valdez oil spill. If Chugach Alaska offers to transfer approximately 231,000 acres of subsurface land to the Department of the Interior, the federal government must then provide 65,374 acres of surface land in the Chugach region in return. The bill is driven by concerns about how the Exxon Valdez Oil Spill Trustee Council’s program created a split ownership situation and aims to consolidate land ownership and resolve related issues, ultimately benefiting both parties and furthering conservation efforts.
