Bill overview
The Gas Prices Relief Act of 2026 proposes a temporary suspension of the federal gasoline tax for a period between the bill’s enactment and October 1, 2026. This would temporarily lower the price at the pump for consumers. To offset the lost revenue, the bill directs the Treasury Department to transfer funds from the general fund to the Highway Trust Fund and the Leaking Underground Storage Tank Trust Fund. It also includes provisions to ensure that gas stations pass the tax savings on to consumers and penalize those who do not.
