Bill overview
This bill updates the Undetectable Firearms Act of 1988 to make firearms more easily detectable by metal detectors at airports and other security checkpoints. Currently, firearms must be as detectable as a specific stainless steel exemplar. The bill raises the standard for detectability, requiring firearms to contain a material that produces a magnetic field equivalent to that of 3.7 ounces of stainless steel when all non-essential parts are removed. It also expands exceptions for firearms owned or used by the U.S. government or manufactured under contract with the government.
