Bill overview
This bill clarifies the legal jurisdiction for civil cases involving the Shivwits Band of Paiutes in southwestern Utah. It grants the State of Utah jurisdiction over civil lawsuits that occur on or within the tribe’s Indian lands, which are held in trust by the United States or subject to restrictions against sale. The bill also allows the tribe to lease its land held in trust for up to 99 years and establishes a framework for resolving contract disputes in state court. Importantly, it preserves the tribe’s sovereign immunity.
