Bill overview
This bill, the Downwinder Commemoration Act of 2025, seeks to honor the Downwinder communities of New Mexico, which experienced significant health problems – including cancer and infertility – due to radioactive fallout from the 1945 atomic bomb test at White Sands. The act directs the Departments of the Army, Air Force, and Interior to create and place three commemorative plaques recognizing the suffering of these communities. These plaques will be located at the White Sands Missile Range, Holloman Air Force Base, and White Sands National Park, respectively.
