Bill overview
The BRAVE Burma Act extends and strengthens existing sanctions against the military junta in Myanmar (Burma). It requires the President to annually assess whether specific Burmese entities, including state-owned businesses and the jet fuel sector, meet criteria for sanctions and to limit U.S. support for Burma’s IMF shareholding while the State Administrative Council is in power. The bill also establishes a Special Envoy for Burma with ambassadorial rank to coordinate U.S. policy and promote a return to democracy, along with specific duties related to sanctions, international pressure, and engagement with various groups within Myanmar and neighboring countries.
