Bill overview
The Veteran Caregiver Reeducation, Reemployment, and Retirement Act aims to provide greater support for family caregivers of veterans. It extends medical care coverage for caregivers for 180 days after removal from the program, unless dismissed for misconduct, and requires the VA to offer bereavement counseling and retirement planning services. The bill also provides assistance to caregivers returning to the workforce, including job training and placement support, and directs the VA and Labor Departments to study the feasibility of a returnship program. Finally, it mandates a GAO report on the VA’s support for caregivers transitioning away from caregiving and a study on hiring former caregivers within VA facilities.
