Bill overview
This bill creates federal criminal penalties for intentionally interfering with the safety or duties of a National Guard member. It defines a ‘posted protective zone’ as an area around a National Guard member, marked to warn others, and makes it a crime to knowingly enter or remain within this zone with the intent to impede, intimidate, or interfere with the Guard member’s work. The bill increases the potential prison sentence if physical contact or other threatening actions occur during the interference. Importantly, the bill clarifies that protected First Amendment activities outside the zone are not prohibited.
