Bill overview
The Defending American Property Abroad Act of 2026 aims to protect U.S. property abroad by allowing the President to restrict the entry of vessels into U.S. ports if those vessels have previously visited ports in Western Hemisphere countries with free trade agreements with the U.S. that have been nationalized or expropriated. This restriction can be lifted if the country restores ownership, provides compensation, or the dispute is resolved. The bill also includes provisions for emergency access and allows for the designation and subsequent removal of ports subject to these restrictions.
