Bill overview
This bill, known as the HELD Act, aims to ensure that states and local governments cooperate with Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) when it comes to holding individuals in their custody who are subject to immigration detainers. It proposes to withhold federal funding from any state or local jurisdiction that has laws, policies, or procedures that hinder their ability to respond to ICE requests for information or to hold individuals for a short period to allow ICE to take custody. The goal is to improve communication and collaboration between local law enforcement and federal immigration authorities.
