Bill overview
The Truth in Tariffs Act aims to increase transparency for consumers regarding the impact of tariffs on the prices of goods they purchase. Starting 30 days after the bill’s enactment, retailers must clearly display to customers the portion of a product’s price that is attributable to a ‘covered tariff,’ which is defined as a tariff imposed by the President on an emergency or discretionary basis and effective on or after January 20, 2025. Small businesses are exempt from this requirement. The Federal Trade Commission will enforce the law and can impose penalties for violations.
