Bill overview
The SHORT Act amends tax and firearms laws to remove short-barreled rifles and shotguns, as well as certain other weapons, from the definition of firearms under the National Firearms Act. This aims to eliminate the disparate treatment of these weapons compared to standard firearms and reduces the federal government’s role in regulating their ownership. The bill also seeks to preempt state laws that impose taxes or registration requirements on these weapons, and includes a provision for the destruction of existing National Firearms Registry records after a specified period.
